Urban Intervention

AR557 Autumn - 2020/2021

The railway station is a building dating from 1846. The area includes a mix of uses including retail, car parking, goods shed and railway-related developments.

From Westgate to its junction with Station Road West and St. Dunstan Street is characterized by medieval and Georgian buildings. There is a good mix of street uses, including restaurants, shops, offices, bars and a hotel.

St Dunstan's street is the main route from the station to the city, and the attractive cityscape encourages high pedestrian crossing. But the street is affected by vehicular traffic. Beyond the level crossing to the North, pedestrian activity is reduced and residential use is dominant.

Cross Ventilation is used for each floor. It helps to moderate internal temperature, reducing the accumulation of moisture and creating air movement. During the winter day, to allow natural ventilation all windows are opened for cross ventilation to flow. However, the building needs to be heated due to the cold temperatures that will occur in the winter months. winter sun will enter the building, the solar gain will heat the space as well as thermal mass walls. Evergreen trees are used to protect buildings from the wind. During the summer day, to allow natural ventilation all windows are opened for cross ventilation to flow. The earth tubes carry cold air from the underground that is connected from the outside to the building.

Evergreen trees are used to protect buildings from the wind. The orientation of the building is set in a specific place to allow and control the solar shading that will reduce the amount of sunlight coming into the building

Stack Ventilation is used only in the Museum / Gallery area to provide more efficient ventilation in a public area.

With heavy traffic moving around and through the Westgate Towers, the key elements of a good urban area are here; historic buildings; good description of the boundaries of space; and natural landscape elements (water, trees and plants).
